Chapter Five-- Levittown's Palimpsest:  Colored Skin

Outside the Gates of Eden:  The Dream of America from Hiroshima to Now

This is the standard lease/rental agreement for the Levittown house, later adapted into a sales agreement.  The racial covenant is found at the top of the second page, article 25, all in capital letters:  THE TENANT AGREES NOT TO PERMIT THE PREMISES TO BE USED OR OCCUPIED BY ANY PERSON OTHER THAN MEMBERS OF THE CAUCASIAN RACE, BUT THE EMPLOYMENT AND MAINTENANCE OF OTHER THAN CAUCASION SERVANTS SHALL BE PERMITTED.
